"A NEW ATTITUDE"
(By Tamara Di Tella)

As a creator of new products, are you afraid every time you start something new?

Hmmm…let’s see…when did it change that you didn’t notice? Your body, I mean. Don’t tell me that it was all of a sudden because nature doesn’t work that way. Your body, you should know, is slow, slow to get the message, slow to adapt to it, slow to put it in practice, and slow to show results.

One morning, you decide that you’ve had it with the growing cushion around your middle section. So you start to exercise. But your body will take a whole week to get the message that you are now going to the gym. Then, it will take it a few days to react to your decision.

Finally, it will take more time to show the changes you expect to see. By the time your body starts showing the signs, you are disappointed and quit going to the gym.

Now that you know that your body is a little slow to react, you are prepared to change your attitude, yes? Yes! And that’s all you need to succeed. A change of attitude. Let your body take its time, for heaven’s sake!

INTERVIEW TO TAMARA -
STARTING SOMETHING NEW

As a creator of new products, are you afraid every time you start something new?

Every time I launch a new product I do it because I am absolutely convinced that it will be a success. My family was a little worried, though. I remember my brother-in-law, Guido, said: "Tamara, this is going to be difficult, to impose a product you do not know ... it will cost you much energy, time and money." However, 15 days after the opening the Tamara Di Tella Spa I phoned him to tell him that my spa was already self-sufficient! "I know," Guido answered, “I see you in all the magazines!"

INTERVIEW TO TAMARA - SPA TAMARA DI TELLA

The Spa was your first innovative idea, right?

Yes, indeed, the SPA was my first innovative idea and my first challenge too. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it appears quite and average product, but at that time the very concept of Spa was completely unknown to the vast majority of people in the country.

At that time, in 1990, in Argentina, nobody knew what SPA wanted to say; neither the term "Spa", nor the concept. I was very lucky because I managed to impose as a new product and create the need in the public.

I remember the magazines asked me for interviews and they all started with the same heading: "What is a Spa?" And, in the article, the journalist invariably asked: "What does it mean the word Spa?," "How do you pronounce it?

"TRIM AND TONE"
(By Tamara Di Tella)

The Tamara Di Tella Method will challenge your body, not sweat until you are dead. It will help you lose calories and burn fat without gasping for air. It will trim and tone your entire body without a strenuous demand.

You might end the class physically exhausted, but happy and with a big smile on your face as if you had been partying, except that…you haven’t, because this is exercising, not dancing.

Like I tell my clients: “My Method is a lot of work…all of it nice”.

"FIRST THINGS FIRST"
(By Tamara Di Tella)

O.K., let’s agree that my method will let you discover how to condition your core in a powerful new way and expand your body's potential, adding cardio to your classical Pilates. In this manner, you will enhance your core conditioning though the incorporation of the aerobic element.

Once we agree on this, we can go back to the basics. My method will let you shed a size faster and more efficiently than with any other mind-body regimen because of its cardio characteristic. The Tamara Di Tella method also targets your abs, your derriere, your legs, your arms, and your entire body. Indeed, you will lose some pounds and even getting rid of some cellulite as well!

For those of you who are inconsistent, don’t you worry about getting bored, or not having the consistency to carry on. There is no record of anybody abandoning as there is no record of anybody walking away while the music is still playing.

"SO, IS HE, OR ISN'T HE?"
(By Tamara Di Tella)

So, is he, Or Isn’t he? Is Joseph Pilates or isn’t Joseph Pilates the Creator of a Method? The question, rather, is: Is Pilates a creator or formulator? Let’s see. What young Joseph did was put together the best of the work and discoveries of the great teachers who came before him, selecting a bit from each and everyone of them into a new method, his own method, which he called Contrology. Many years later, this new method was called: Pilates. It combined a little bit of everything, the best of Yoga, the best of Ballet, some parts of mind-and-body millenary concepts, a selection of Hippocrates’ best theories, and also the concept of “proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation”, or PNF, which had been created earlier by Margarett Knott and Dorothy Vass.

This combination of everything with a bit of this and a bit of that is what we today know as Pilates. So, is Pilates the creator of a new method after all? Or is he simply the person who put together the works of others before him? If you ask me, I’d say that yes, indeed, Joseph Pilates is the creator of a new and revolutionary method. Why do I say this?

Well, because selecting and combining should in itself a creation, because, let’s face it, nobody invents anything from scratch, we all take a bit from here, and a bit from there to produce our own new findings. This is the was the story goes…

"THE MAKING OF THE REFORMER"
(By Tamara Di Tella)

The Reformer is a piece of craftsmanship which looks not very beautiful, to be quite honest. Young Joseph looked around and he found a piano, and from its lid he made a sliding floor. Then he opened a mattress (at that time mattresses had springs inside) and took out the springs, which he would later use as weighs. He then completed his work with loops, leather straps, adjustable bars, and later on, a wooden box, a jumping board, and other crazy things until he realized he had made a rehabilitation bed. Well… sort of.

Young Joseph did not have the academic credentials to rehabilitate anyone, much less wounded soldiers. But, an imaginative and resourceful man he was, he did not let this minor detail stand in his way. Joseph started working with those soldiers until one day he realized he had something going and that something was not bad at all. In fact, it was excellent.

Just as he called the machine Der Reformer; the exercises to perform on it he called Contrology, or The Art of Control.

"A MAN NAMED JOE" (By Tamara Di Tella)

Pilates is a relatively new phenomenon. It goes back to the 1920’s when a man named Joseph Hubertus Pilates designed a machine to help wounded soldiers in an English labor camp, during WWI (1914-1918). He was a young German citizen who lived in London at the time the First World War broke out. Nobody knows for sure, but apparently, this young German had worked at a circus, as a boxer, and at various other unusual jobs, until he was taken to a detention camp for German citizens.

Once there, he was asked his occupation, and when he said he worked as a body builder at a circus, they asked him to work with wounded soldiers to help them recover their bodily strength. Young Joseph protested because he had no tools to work with. “If you do not have the tools, you make them!” was the official answer.

PILATES BASIC PRINCIPLES: PRECISION

Precision encapsulates the whole experience, tying all the principles into one. You cannot flow in your workout if you are not applying the concentration of mind to body.

You cannot control each movement without centering, or working from your core.

You cannot work from your center without proper breathing, and you cannot do any of the above without precision.

The commitment to precision is a state of mind that demands exacting attention to every detail. You cannot chat your way through a workout. If that is what you want, join the local health club.

The Pilates method is a precise, exacting discipline, and the mastery of precision will carry over into daily life.

PILATES BASIC PRINCIPLES: FLOW

The flow of the work is where we find the artistry in the movement. Pay attention to the transitions from one exercise to the next.

Perform the transitions with no wasted movement.

While performing an exercise, flow one repetition into the next. Keep the carriage moving, without hesitations and without jerking.

But focusing on flow results in more than artistry or beauty in movement.

A proper flow intensifies the workout. Without wasted movements, the load remains in your core rather than being lost in the shuffle.
