What is Tamara Di Tella Pilates?

PILATES TAMARA DI TELLA TANGOWhile traditional Pilates derived partly from ancient yoga asanas, the TAMARA DI TELLA Pilates and Tangolates (Tango Pilates), exercise system was formulated by Tamara Di Tella in 2004 for more specific purposes. It all started in a hospital, to help rehabilitate patients with severe dysfunctions of the nervous system. The method evolved into what is today considered the most contemporary innovation to traditional Pilates, a method that incorporates an aerobic element.  Although traditional Pilates is not a complete health system,  because it lacks the cardio component, it is quite useful. Pilates focuses mainly on cultivating the mind and the body, while the TAMARA DI TELLA Pilates and Tangolates (Tango Pilates), embraces the Western philosophies of fitness as well as the latest discoveries of neuroscience. Director Tamara Di Tella understands the goal of physical education and creates a unique blend of Pilates, Music Therapy, Neurosciences of Movement, and other disciplines, to assist clients in achieving a healthier body regardless of their age or gender, in a more aerobic kind of Pilates.

Courses, Intensive Seminars, workshops and the like, are also offered on specific themes that may include the new routines and exercises which result form our continuous research on the method.

The Tamara Di Tella Method (Pilates – Tangolates – Tango Pilates) –an everyday growing experience—is the more cardio version of classical Pilates. But it is not just a version of Pilates. Rather is a unique, distinctive and altogether different method that incorporates a new philosophy to traditional Pilates that says that for any kind of physical activity to be complete, it must have a cardio or aerobic element.  Actually, the three elements that are indispensable for any kind of physical activity to be complete are: Strength, flexibility and aerobic. If any of these three elements are missing, the physical activity is not complete.

We, at the Tamara Di Tella Schools (Pilates – Tangolates - Tango Pilates) are the model school against which other Schools compare to, and we shall continue to establish the patterns as a pioneer in the world of Pilates in the Spanish-speaking world, a referent for others that follow. This is our commitment and our responsibility. Tango Pilates

May 2008

Since about the year 2000, the trend in fitness stopped being the “huffing and puffing” we were used to with step and aerobics, and started to focus on the mind and the body.

The names that started sounding were yoga and Pilates.  But a few years later, experts started realizing that pilates lacked the aerobic element that is considered essential to any PILATES TAMARA DI TELLA TANGOfitness activity.

“Yogalates” could not resolve that problem either because --even though it was excellent-- it was more of the same. Then there was also “Gyrotonics”, but, again, as good as it was, just like pilates itself, gyrotonics fell kind of short on the cardio side.

So, by the year 2003, people started wondering whether pilates, yogalates or gyrotonics were so complete exercises after all.  Nobody doubted that they were good, but… were they complete?. The answer to that question was obvious: no, they were not complete. They were kind of weak on the aerobic side.

By 2004 a new method appeared that promised to resolve that problem. The name was Tangolates and it added music, and with it, the cardio element people were looking for. So, there it was, and still is: Tangolates for all.

While Tangolates and Pilates are similar, and although they both have similar goals, they are definitely not the same. The music marks the difference.

What Is Tangolates?

Tangolates is a perfect cross between Tango and Pilates. Tangolates:

* Concentrates on a flowing movement
* Introduces some concentrated aerobic element
* Promotes body alignment
* Strengthens the abdominals

* When challenging it is great for advanced exercisers
* For beginners, it is nice and easy
* Targets your abs, back and legs making your body strong and flexible


And, very important…

* Incorporates the music making exercises more fun to perform.

In sum: While Tangolates helps with posture and flexibility, it is as much of a cardio training workout, as any of the aerobics we know… except that is more concentrated than your regular aerobics!!
